With summer having arrived, you will be seeing a lot more reviews of natural fibre diapers on the blog for the next while, in honor of the season. Natural fibre diapers are great for summer as they can be worn without a cover part of the time to increase breathability and coolness to the diaper area, which will increase comfort for your baby and decrease the likelihood of irritation and rash, especially with the hot and humid weather.
Up first in our series of natural fibre reviews, I worked with Heather Post, owner of Modern Cloth, who stocks an amazing variety of modern cloth diaper choices and more. Like so many mom-founded businesses, Modern Cloth began when Heather herself began investigating the options for modern cloth diapering when she was pregnant with her first child. Tossing worries about pins & toilet dunking aside, she set her mind on using modern cloth diapers on their baby, and even won her husband over to the idea as well. She is now more passionate about modern cloth diapering than ever, and has a well-stocked online shop filled with fitteds, contours, pockets, all-in-ones, and more! Aside from just diapers, Heather's shop also stocks swim diapers, training pants, accessories, and other items for mom and baby. The other great thing about Modern Cloth is that they accept back gently-used diapers as trade-ins towards new fluff! They also have a great newborn diaper rental program so that you don't have to be concerned about stockpiling diapers that will quickly get outgrown. Overall, this is a great mom-owned business (from Charleston, South Carolina!) that I've been thrilled to partner with.
a Kissa's Fitted Cotton Fleece Diaper by Kissaluvs (starts at $13.95). This diaper comes in three sizes: Newborn (5-15lbs), Size 1 (10-25lbs), and Size 2 (20-40lbs). For nine month old baby Aurelia, the Size 1 fit very well and came in a sweet lavender color with rainbow serging around the edges. This cotton fleece diaper is a blend of 90% cotton and only 10% polyester, so it is highly breathable but still has a good amount of stretch in the fabric itself from the tiny bit of polyester fleece. It comes super soft in the package and, although it does mat down slightly, it does remain very soft and cozy, especially when dried in the dryer. This diaper has snaps at the waist to further adjust for a perfect size (and has crossover snapping capabilities), and the leg gussets are elasticized to help contain messes.

Kissaluvs Marvels One-Size Diaper Cover ($16.95). I received this one-size snapping cover in "Rose" which was a nice color match to the natural hue of the Kissa's fitted diaper as well. Unfortunately, although this waterproof diaper cover did the trick in terms of preventing all leaks (we never had any wicking or leaking while wearing it), I did find that the fit of it was a little funny over the Kissa's fitted. This one-size diaper cover boasts that it can fit from 5-40lbs; however, I did find that it fit a little on the small side in the waist and legs, whilst still staying a little too baggy/bulky in the rise. In fact, when I fastened it up in what I felt was a typical snapping fashion for our regular snap dipes and covers, the leg gussets became very, very tight. If I loosened it too much more, I predicted leaking from the leg holes as there was no hip snap to cinch the wing in close. So, even after some further adjusting, Aurelia still ended up with some red marks on her chunky thighs (which faded and never bothered her, but still did bother me a slight bit). However, mommies with skinnier-thighed babies might find that this cover provides a better fit for their little ones.
|The fit of these leg gussets was a challenge for chunky thighs|
I should mention that there is a little bit of a learning curve (or at least an attention curve) to using a cover over a fitted (as opposed to a prefold or simply fastening a pocket or AIO)--because many cute fitted diapers have features like leg ruffles or cotton prints, etc of their own, you have to be extra diligent when applying the cover, checking that every square inch of the fitted is tucked fully into the waterproof cover. My first few times, I nearly left a bit of the fitted's leg ruffle sticking out just a teeny bit, but caught it before I had any wicking problems.
Overall, I think every cloth diapering parent should consider adding some sort of natural fibre fitteds (or contours--Modern Cloth carries them as well!) to their diapering repetoire, especially for the hot days of summer or for if you regularly have a sensitive little one (like I do). Wearing fitteds more often has dramatically reduced Aurelia's rashiness and redness and has conveniently reduced the need to do so much diaper free time, especially now that she is mobile and is leaving puddles all over the house like a little puppy ;)
