Facebook February Feature #4

Meet Meredith Abney, owner of GoGo Natural

Meredith Abney has been passionate about cloth diapering from the get-go. Along the way, her good friend--an avid cloth diaperer--had plenty of tips and education to share with her. When Meredith brought home her newfound knowledge, her husband was interested as well, for environmental and fiscal reasons. So, when their firstborn came along, they began cloth diapering and have never looked back. In fact, what started out as a personal cause turned into something much bigger when Meredith, always one to have an entrepreneurial spirit within her, realized that she could do something with this new passion during her extra time off on maternity leave. She began looking further into the industry and formulating a plan. Then, with the perfect idea striking her at the perfect time, Meredith transitioned out of her job in Microbiology and into the new and exciting realm of a Work At Home Mom. GoGo Natural, born in February of 2007, is excited to be marking its four year anniversary this month!

Meredith confesses that the last four years have been amazing, filled with a lot of growth, a lot of learning, and a whole lot of new moms converted to cloth along the way! Although business was gradual early on, it really started to accelerate over the last few years thanks to a loyal base of customers and their raving reviews on social media and sites like diaperpin.com. Additionally, Meredith has a hunch that the recession probably also factored into refocusing many parents on the benefits of cloth.

Meredith is more passionate about cloth diapering and its implications than ever. She shared with me:

Good choices lead to good outcomes. I believe cloth diapering is one choice that can create a virtuous circle of benefits for moms and families. Cloth is widely regarded as being the best for your baby, it saves money that few can spare in these times, it saves a tremendous amount from our landfills downstream, and it reduces our carbon footprint upstream. Those are the tangibles; the intangibles are the financial choices that are freed up with the savings, the closeness it brings to your babies, the connections strengthened in the family, and the values showcased for the environment to others. Overall, our mission is this: to empower young families to live their dreams of financial prudence with good environmental stewardship.

Although GoGo Natural is primarily run by Meredith herself, she does get some (much needed) help from time to time from a few key individuals. Her husband also helps out in the evenings and weekends with a random assortment of roles (marketing, strategy, operations) and--of course--order packing. Together, Meredith and her close team work on promoting the business both online and locally, using everything from social media to trade shows to showcase what they've got to offer. When it comes down to it, though, Meredith still shares that she's just another WAHM (work at home Mom) business like so many others out there. She is extremely thankful to be involved in such a tight-knit community, seeing their own success and the success of others like them, as well as inspiring a little hope in other small businesses.

When she's not busy with the business, Meredith enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband and their three beautiful children in sunny Phoenix, Arizona, which she's always called home. With all their kids being under age four and a half, the house feels busy and chaotic, but Meredith loves it. When she does get time to herself, Meredith finds great personal fulfillment in running, even participating in marathon running from time to time. As for what the future holds, Meredith can't say for sure, but is certain it will continue to involve always striving to do what's best for their family and society. Oh yes, and there's bound to be a lot of fluffy love in there, too.

This is feature number 4 of 8 for our Facebook February promotion. Read all the features this month and then join us for a Facebook party on Monday, February 28th at 8:00 PM CST, where Meredith and GoGo Natural will be giving away a FREE Dinkledooz Pocket Diaper to one lucky winner!

These are the things I constantly try to put into words when people thing I'm crazy to use cloth. We have VERY limited income right now and I feel like not needing money for formula or diapers has taken a huge strain off of our finances and our marriage and family!
